House M.D.’ Season 5 on DVD

September 7th, 2009 by Jason Myers

The reviews are variable for Season 5 of House, M.D., which was recently released on DVD. Whether fans liked Season 5 or not, fans of the program concur that it was different. For instance, Cameron and Chase were not featured as heavily, and some audience members felt that the season was more melodramatic than other seasons.

Those that liked Season 5 report that the season connects with the viewers better than in previous shows, and that the fan learns more about how House’s is haunted by his mental demons. The overriding sentiment is that if Hugh Laurie is in the series it will continue to be a top rated, smart television program. Even medical professionals who watch House, M.D. say that in spite of its sensationalistic presentation, the show is very engrossing and does give the viewers an idea of the emotions a physician goes through when contemplating a difficult diagnosis.

Fans who were somewhat disappointed by House M.D. Season 5 say that the writing varies in quality: the season begins strongly, includes some boring episodes mid-season, then gathers momentum during the remainder of the season. An element that did not entertain many viewers was what they saw as a blatant and hokey way of hinting at a P.I. spinoff show by making use of a character that was not pertinent to the show. Other complaints were that the episodes were less compelling and that variable quality writing prompted House’s trademark biting observations to cross the line into unwarranted shock value sometimes.

The 24 shows comprising Season 5 allow non-work and workplace boundaries to blur repeatedly among the major characters. Guest appearances in Season 5 include eljko Ivanek, Mos Def, and Carl Reiner. The DVD collection includes extras covering adjustments to Dr. Cuddy’s life, how the program is cast, and the level of accuracy in the stories. The DVD set also contains a 100th episode celebration, and commentary for the episode about the patient with the “locked-in syndrome.”

Between those fans who really liked Season 5 and those who were more critical, the vast majority report they still are entertained by the show very much and are happily awaiting House, M.D., Season 6.
