Rob Thomas Cradlesong
October 3rd, 2009 by Johny Cage
Rob Thomas, of Matchbox 20 fame, started his solo music career with the 2005 album “Something To Be.” The album was well received by fans and critics alike. It soon became a multi-platinum seller after debuting at number one on the charts. After four years, which saw a reunion with Matchbox 20, Thomas is back to doing solo work.
Thomas’ second album titled “Cradlesong,” was released on June 30th, 2009. There’s nothing really new or innovative in this second solo outing. For anyone who enjoyed the first album, you’ll feel right at home listening to “Cradlesong.” The sound is a mix of 80′s and modern pop music.
The album never gets into edgy territory. It’s filled with radio friendly music. Thomas retains his up tempo and positive style of music, with a few exceptions for some less positive lyrics. These mostly deal with love issues and dysfunctional relationships. The production quality and performances here are all top notch.
There’s a nice variety of ballads and acoustic tunes with a lot of emotion in them. A good example of this is the song with the same title as the album itself. “Her Diamonds,” is a single that will likely get the most radio play rotation. It’s destined to be one of the more popular tracks on the album. It’s certainly one of the most memorable.
The albums title track, “Cradlesong,” is a nice acoustic number. The album features 14 songs in all, with two more bonus tracks. Rob Thomas keeps proving that he can consistently write, record, and perform great pop music. This album is definitely worth a listen for all of his fans. I recommend picking this one up as soon as you can.
