NFL Playoff Contenders in 2009

November 9th, 2009 by Ryan Mulligan

We have seven weeks of football behind us, and things are slowly beginning to take shape in each conference. While there’s no clear favorite in the AFC and the NFC, there are teams who’ve asserted themselves as forces to be reckoned with and definite contenders.

This article will break down some of the top teams in each conference, followed by a prediction as to who ends up emerging in each of the two conferences.

The first team that deserves a mention is the Pittsburgh Steelers. While they were surprise losers to the Bears and the Bengals, they’ve since improved with some great football. Everything is clicking in Pittsburgh after a shaky start, and the team has its sights set on another Super Bowl win.

While things do look great in Pittsburgh, the Patriots have followed a similar course. A rough beginning to the season seems to have smoothed out, and New England is playing the dominant type of football that we all witnessed two seasons ago. The Denver Broncos have also started the season with a bang, and could very easily find themselves in the playoffs.

While all of these teams have been great, no AFC team has been as strong as the Colts. An incredibly efficient offense has dominated its opponents, thanks to the steady hand of Peyton Manning. Until the Colts lose, they’re tops in the conference.

As far as the NFC is concerned, the major story in this conference is the New Orleans Saints. This team has what may be the best offense in all of football.

Riding the success of QB Drew Brees, the offense is unstoppable and strong enough to win just about every time they play, thanks to Brees. They beat the Giants at home pretty handily, making a bold statement in the process.

The Saints are the favorite to emerge in the NFC at the moment. However, they’ll have to fight off some other teams playing great football. The Vikings and the Eagles could very well be just as strong, and the Cowboys are finally beginning to get things together. Looming not too far behind are the defending NFC champion Cardinals, and of course, the New York Giants.
